Learn two easy ways to crochet without slanting and make vertical stripes perfectly straight in your amigurumi.
Crocheting in continuous rounds tends to slant right for right-handed work and left to left-handed work. And this is particularly annoying when trying to make vertical lines in your amigurumi. Follow the written instructions or the video tutorial below!
Working in the Back Loop
- Crochet in the back loop right from the beginning of you work;
- To change colors insert your hook between the top loops of your work grabbing only the back loop;
- Yarn over with the main color;
- Pull up a loop;
- Yarn over with the second color;
- Pull the yarn through the loops on the hook, completing the single crochet;
- Continue to crochet, in the back loop only, with the second color to the end of the vertical stripe;
- On the last stitch of the stripe remember to complete the single crochet with the main color;
- Finish the round with the main color;
- Repeat from the beginning to continue the vertical stripe.

Make sure to leave enough slack on the yarns that cross behind the stripe so that your work doesn’t bunch up.
Using this technique all the crochet stitches are straight and stacked on top of each other but it leaves a texture that you might not want on your amigurumi, that’s where the next method comes into play.
Working in the Front Loop
For this method I recomend using a slightly smaller hook than what you’re used to so you don’t get gaps betwen the stitches. For example, for a medium weight yarn I usually use a 3.5mm hook, but for this technique I’m using a 3mm hook.
- Crochet in the front loop right from the beginning of you work;
- To change colors catch the front loop, the one closest to you;
- Yarn over with the main color;
- Pull up a loop;
- Yarn over with the second color;
- Pull the yarn through the two loops on the hook, completing the single crochet;
- To work the stripe grab the front loop of the next stitch and the yarn that crossed behind the stripe with your hook and complete one sigle crochet;
- Continue to single crochet across the top of the stripe always grabbng the front loop and the yarn that is crossing bhing the stripe
- On the last stitch of the stripe remember to complete the single crochet with the main color;
- Finish the round with the main color;
- Repeat from the beginning to continue the vertical stripe.

Both methods work to keep the vertical amigurumi stripes really straight. Take a peek at the video below to discover why your crochet slants and how to correct it and get the perfect vertical lines!
