How to Join with Half Double Crochet

Learn how to add a new color to your project by adding it with a half double crochet! This chainess join allows you to add a new skein or color to your project.

  1. Work a slipknot on your hook with a new yarn;
  2. Yarn over grabbing the yarn with your index finger;
  3. Insert the hook into the stitch where you want to join the new yarn;
  4. Yarn over and pull up a loop;
  5. Yarn over and pull the yarn through the three loops on the hook completing the half double crochet.

Joining with a half double crochet is very useful when you want to add a new color to the beginning of a row, without the need of an initial chain, or when you ran out of yarn at the end of a row. Chainless joins are a way of building up the height of a row or round that is less noticeable and less flimsy and finicky than a chain.
