The half double crochet stitch (HDC) is one of the most versatile and beginner-friendly stitches in crochet. It sits perfectly between single crochet and double crochet in height, making it ideal when you want a fabric that’s not too tight and not too airy.
If you’ve mastered single crochet and are ready to level up your skills, the half double crochet is the perfect next step. It works up faster than single crochet, creates a soft texture, and is used in everything from garments and blankets to amigurumi and accessories.
In this tutorial, you’ll learn exactly how to work the half double crochet stitch step by step, plus tips to keep your edges neat and your tension consistent. The half double crochet creates a tight fabric, similar to the single crochet, but because it is taller it works up quicker!
Follow the written instructions or the video tutorial below to learn how to work the double crochet crochet!
Step-by-Step: How to Work the Half Double Crochet
- Yarn over.

- Insert your hook into the next stitch.

- Yarn over.

- Pull up a loop. You will now have 3 loops on your hook.

- Yarn over one more time.

- Pull the yarn through all 3 loops on your hook.

That’s it! You’ve completed one half double crochet stitch.
Turning Chains and Rows
When working in rows:
- Chain 2 at the beginning of a new row (this usually counts as your turning chain).
- Turn your work to start a new row.
- Work the first half double crochet into the first stitch (unless your pattern states otherwise).
Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them
Problem: Edges look uneven
Make sure you’re inserting your hook into the correct first and last stitches of each row. You can also work a linked half double crochet as your first stitch.
Problem: Fabric feels too tight
Try loosening your tension slightly or using a slightly larger hook.
Problem: Gaps between stitches
Make sure you’re pulling through all 3 loops at once and not splitting the yarn. Try to work with a tighter tension or using a slightly smaller hook.
When to Use Half Double Crochet
Half double crochet works beautifully for:
- Scarves and cowls
- Blankets
- Sweaters and cardigans
- Hats
- Bags
- Shaping amigurumi pieces
It’s especially useful when you want something that works up faster than single crochet but it’s not too loose.
The half double crochet is one of those foundational stitches that opens the door to countless projects. Once you feel comfortable with it, you’ll be able to adjust patterns, modify stitch height and experiment with textures confidently.
It’s simple, versatile, and incredibly useful! A true staple in every crocheter’s toolkit.
